the mammoth
The mammoth is a giant animal with long brown hair and tusks. The mammoth became extinct millions of years ago. The mammoth use to roam the earth about five million years ago until its extinction. The mammoth lived during a time often known as the Ice Age. Mammoths were related to elephants. The mammoth was about 13 feet tall and it weighed in at about ten tons. The Wooly Mammoth was the last species of mammoths to live before their extinction. Other species of mammoths included the Siberian and Columbian mammoths. Mammoths lived in many different locations on earth including North America and Eurasia. There are many different theories as to how the mammoth became extinct. One theory is that the climate became much warmer, glaciers started to melt, and sea levels began to rise killing all of the mammoths. Another theory is that humans may have killed the mammoths by excessively hunting. Another idea is that the mammoths became extinct due to a contagious disease that was spread throughout the community. Well preserved fossils of mammoths are often found in Siberia and Alaska. These fossils help scientists to trace back the history of mammoths and learn more about them. Below you will find some pictures of mammoth fossils and pictures of what it is believed a mammoth would look like.
